Political Rambles

I've been brewing a couple of opinions in my head lately and I think that I have to get it all out so I can start worring about something else. But before I start let me just say that I know NOTHING about politics or even about the economy....all I know is what has effected me and my close friends and family. I am NOT making an educated statement....I do not research my ideas and rarely watch the news. So what I am about to say is seriously MY OPINION and not truth or fact. It fact it's probably not even based on fact.

OK first of all....I'd like to start with the problem with people and families. I think that either most or all of our social problems and problems with families start with one word.....SELFISHNESS. Seriously. I first started noticing it in my own marriage. Brent and I have worked very hard to make each other happy. But I often find myself wanting to please me and my wants and needs. I'd rather make Brent comply with what I want than give in to what he wants. It's hard....very hard. But we are both working at this and trying to give in a little more.

But then I noticed that my 5th grade students were also acting very selfish. Now granted they are 10 and most 10 year olds are selfish. But what I was noticing was beyond the normal 10 year old behavior. My students now are so selfish that they will not only cheat to get a good grade, they will litterally FIGHT when they think someone is looking at them. I have students that will love one person in one hour and hate them the very next hour all because they wouldn't follow their demands. Or I have another student who will resort to YELLING at the top of her lungs so that she can be the only one dominating the conversation. Most students wont even pick up a piece of paper for me that I dropped. Or loan a pencil to another student. And don't even get me started on how many students want me to make an exception for them and they swear not to tell anyone else. The selfishness in my class is OVERWHELMING!!!!

So then I started thinking about who taught them this selfish behavior.....their parents. I'm not a parent yet...but I do know that you have to litteraly give up your life for you children. Parents today allow others (including day care and teachers) to raise their kids for them. Or, in some cases, allow the kids to raise themselves. My students set their own bed time, make their own meals, and admit to NEVER having time to talk to their parents. And only 3 of my 27 students have a dad. So why are parents so self consumed that they don't have time for their kids.

And you can't tell me that girls who get an abortion aren't selfish. Or the person who goes into MAJOR debt buying clothes that make her look good. OK here's one.....the idiot that thought they could afford an extreemly large house and the banks that told them they could. And why do they need this huge house? Especially when they are under 30?????

OK so on to the next point. I am totally and completly against Obama's stimulus package. It's absolutly ridiculous. And don't freek out.....but I think we need to do nothing. Let us go into a recession. WHY NOT? Sure it will be hard. It will be very hard. Many will lose jobs and homes and most EVERYTHING. But remember my first point? People today are so selfish that it is ruining families.

Think about this....if we went into recession, families will be forced to live on nothing. Families will have to rely on eachother. We will have to spend more time together and less time out to eat or out partying or out doing anything. We will be forced to do more for eachother and hopefully more for others.

I'm not sure if I make any sense at all...but I'm just saying that as hard as it may sound or actually be, I think letting the economy fail might just be God's way of fixing the family. So let it happen.

  1. Here's a good article from the last BYU Magazine about the economic situation and the reason that the government can't really step back and do nothing:

I do understand your point though, for sure. It drives me crazy that those of us who are responsible get screwed over when stupid people can't pay their bills (individuals and corporations!) And I for sure agree with you about the state of families nowadays. I've never understood why people want to have children and then pass them off to someone else to raise them. Easy for me to say though. :)

  2. I agree, too. I get SO riled up when I think about these businesses that are getting bailed out and giving each other BILLIONS of dollars in bonuses. If I weren't LDS, I would consider drinking!
